At a workshop on the role of Pakistani women in politics held on Thursday in the capital of Islamabad, the speakers urged political leaders of different parties to empower women wings of their parties and demanded restoration of six seats for women in the union councils of local governments.

A large number of office bearers of women wings of different political parties, representatives of civil society organizations and women councilors, participated in the conference sponsored by PATTAN, a non-profit and non-governmental development organization.

They said that Pakistani women have limited political role in political parties and political women said they have no role in the party decision-making and women are being maltreated by the male-oriented setup in Pakistan.

The rural/urban division is also a reason for uneven socioeconomic development and the impact of tribal, feudal, and capitalist social formations on women’s lives, they said.

Presenting the key findings of a Baseline Study on Presence and Status of Women in Political Parties across Pakistan, PATTAN National Coordinator Sarwar Bari said the political parties are backbone of democracy and without involving half of Pakistan’s population in political processes the country can’t move forward in any field.

Bari said women’s contribution to agriculture and informal sector is crucial and girls/women perform better than boys/men in education but their participation in decision-making has been very low.

The research data indicates that only 51 percent district chapters of political parties in Pakistan have formed women wings. Almost all the women wings were formed through nomination process carried out by their party leadership. It also shows that women wings of most parties lack powers and authority as all their offices position had been appointed by male party leaders.

The study was conducted in 23 districts of Pakistan during 2008-09. In total, 29 national and regional political parties of Pakistan were studied.

The majority respondents during survey expressed their dissatisfaction regarding implementation of decisions made by women wings. Women participants of the study said that leaders did not value their opinion and decisions of their wings.

In most of the political parties in Pakistan, women wings lack proper interaction with main bodies. Most women believe that their status in the family and society have enhanced after joining political parties and politics. While some women said that a few men defame politically active women. Most women said their parties did not have any gender policy.

Talking about the impacts of militancy on women politics, Farazana Kauri, a political activist of the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf party, told Xinhua that impact of extremism is not confined to women politics but this menace has affected all spheres of life in Pakistan.

Commenting on the fact that some women are serving key posts in Pakistan’s politics including Fahmida Mirza as the speaker of the National Assembly and Hina Rabbani Khar as the state minister for finance and economic affairs, a senior journalist Sumara Khan told Xinhua that Pakistani women are fighting hard for their rights in politics despite all the bias against them.

Int’l conference for Haiti likely to take place in March

An international conference for reconstruction and development of quake-hit Haiti is probably to take place in March, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said on Friday.
mbt sale
The conference would be “likely in March,” Kouchner told RTL radio, but didn’t specify the place of the meeting.

“To recover Haitian people’s hope, it should be signified that we didn’t abandon them and we are already thinking about reconstructing their homes with other countries,” Kouchner said.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy proposed on Thursday to hold an international conference for Haiti’s recovery after the catastrophic tremor hit the country on Tuesday.

There were 1,400 French nationals living in the impoverished former France’s colony, of whom 1,200 reside in capital Port-au-Prince.

Kouchner said rescuers were still searching for some 60 French nationals missing in the quake.

The accurate casualties of the Tuesday catastrophic quake are unknown yet, while Haitian President Rene Preval said he had received reports of death tolls ranging from 30,000 to 50,000 from the magnitude-7.3 quake.

Turkish workers launch new protest over labor rights

Around 2,000 workers of a former state alcohol and tobacco monopoly and their families gathered in the Turkish capital Ankara on Friday for a new wave of protest over labor rights, Turkish media reported.
mbt
Thousands of workers of the Tekel company have been protesting in Ankara for a month against the privatization of the company, which obliges workers to either quit their jobs or accept work in another state institution with lower wages and fewer benefits, the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet Daily News reported on its website.

The workers launched a three-day sit-in protest in front of the building of the Confederation of Turkish Trade Unions (Turk-Is) in Ankara early Friday and will carry out a three-day hunger strike after that, the newspaper said.

It said a total of 12,000 people are expected to participate in the protest by 4 p.m. (1400 GMT) Friday, when the demonstration is scheduled to start.

“I condemn government officials who are indifferent to our protests,” Turk-Is President Mustafa Kumlu was quoted as saying.

The workers will extend their hunger strike indefinitely in what they call a “death fast” if the government fails to meet their demands, the newspaper reported.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has criticized previous protests by Tekel workers as “a speculative action against the government,” saying the employees would be paid in accordance with their education levels and that efforts were already underway to improve the working conditions.

Some 10,000 Tekel workers earned money without working and rendered a huge cost for the government, he was quoted by the newspaper as telling reporters in December.

Global cigarette giant British American Tobacco PLC won an auction for Tekel with a bid of 1.72 billion U.S. dollars in February 2008 and completed the acquisition in June last year.

Haitian police force “vanished”

Along with the hundreds missing from Haiti’s earthquake, apparently so too have the Haitian National Police (HNP), said the spokesperson for the United Nations peacekeeping force here Thursday. mbt

”The National Haitian Police are not visible at all,” said David Wimhurst via a video conference from Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. “They’ve simply vanished.”

”Don’t forget that they’re Haitian too and their family homes have been smashed up or destroyed and their family members have been killed or destroyed, so they’re acting to look after their nearest and dearest,” he added.

With no visible presence of the police force, the United Nations and the international community have been tasked with securing law and order since the 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck on Tuesday.

Currently, the United Nations has 3,000 police and military peacekeepers in Port-au-Prince and by later Thursday 3,500 troops form the United States are expected to arrive.

The UN mission in Haiti, known as MINUSTAH, can request additional security support from the UN Secretariat should security deteriorate, but so far it’s not necessary, said Wimhurst.

”We will, if necessary, bring troops or police from the outside areas into Port-au-Prince,” he said.

However, while the security situation appears to be relatively calm with just a few reports of looting, Wimhurst said, tensions are beginning to heat up.

Thousands of Haitians have been left to fend for themselves. With no shelter, they have taken to the streets, sleeping among slabs of broken concrete. Tons of medicine, food and tents have been slowly arriving in Haiti but access has been difficult, said Wimhurst. mbt reviews

With limited assistance, many are beginning to get “angry and impatient,” said David, adding that if time goes by with little progress, “tempers might become frayed.”

Kim Bolduc, the humanitarian coordinator in Haiti, also said there is a risk of social unrest. Haitians on the streets are asking for help to gather bodies, dispose of them and carry the injured to medical facilities, she said.

She noted that once the World Food Program begins to distribute food the situation might calm down. There is enough relief support for about a week, she added.

”People are in a state of shock,” she said. “They’re waiting for something to happen.”

Red Cross creates website for Haiti’s earthquake survivors

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) created a website for survivors of Haiti’s earthquake, a spokesperson said Thursday in Geneva. mbt

The website, www.icrc.org/familylinks, allows survivors to log in, register, and look for loved ones who may be missing or feared dead.

ICRC spokesperson Marcal Izard said that there are already 1,360 entries in the website’s database. Izard told Reuters that of the total, just 148 came from Haiti, with the rest mainly from the United States and Canada.

With telephone lines cut and a lack of internet access, Haiti’s communication is at a standstill.

The family links website was first used during the conflict in Bosnia in the early 1990s.

The Geneva-based ICRC was founded in 1863 and has offices in 80 countries.MBT Lami Shoes-in Birch

Norway contributes 40 million Norwegian kroners to relief operation in Haiti

The Norwegian government announced on Thursday to provide 40 million Norwegian kroners for relief operations in Haiti, a Caribbean island country which was hit by a devastating earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale on Tuesday afternoon. MBT shoes

In a press release issued on Thursday, Norwegian Prime Minister Yens Stoltenberg described the Haiti earthquake as “a humanitarian disaster striking a people living in poverty.”

He said that it is now decisive to have a broad and coordinated international relief operation in Haiti and that the United Nations should play a central role in relief work.

The Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency Planning will establish a U.N. support camp in Haiti and Norway will also support U.N. efforts with Norwegian Refugee Council emergency personnel, said the prime minister.

Norwegian Minister of Environment and International Development Erik Solheim said that large parts of Haiti are now in ruins and that local relief efforts are insufficient. “We will consider further contributions at the U.N.’s request,” he added.

The Norwegian Red Cross sent a fully-equipped and well-staffed mobile field hospital on Thursday to Haiti to help victims of the earthquake.

Borge Brende, secretary general of the Norwegian Red Cross, was quoted as saying that several of Haiti’s own hospitals have been destroyed or badly damaged in the earthquake.

”It is therefore important that we are able to provide help to those who have survived and are injured,” said Brende, who decided to travel with the field hospital to Haiti, which will need a lot of help in the coming months.mbt walking shoes

Some Norwegian voluntary aid organizations have already engaged themselves in relief operations in Haiti, according to a report by the Norwegian-language newspaper Aftenposten.
